Our mission is to provide students with hands-on experience in geoscience, remote sensing, autonomous systems, and space technologies, while fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment that encourages learning, innovation, and real-world problem solving. The IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) brings together members from a wide range of scientific and engineering backgrounds. Engineers focus on designing hardware, sensors, and data-processing techniques while working closely with geoscience fields such as geophysics, geology, hydrology, and meteorology. Scientists use GRSS as a platform to evaluate, share, and advance research in remote sensing science.
This combination of engineering and geoscience gives GRSS its unique interdisciplinary character and plays an exciting role in advancing remote sensing science and technology. GRSS welcomes members at all career stages, from students just getting started to experienced professionals and retirees, and offers opportunities for learning, recognition, leadership, and professional growth.
Student Branch Chapter Founder
Electrical Engineering
"In the Electrical Engineering degree, there was one roadblock that turned students into engineers. His name was Dr. Saibun Tjuatja. I very fortunately took his class during the busiest time of his career, while he was the IEEE-GRSS President. He urged a few of the more participating students to create a student branch chapter of GRSS here at UTA (what president doesn't have their own organization at their university?!). I couldn't let that stand and put myself to work finding a reason to be on the good side of the one who grades my exams. In parallel with that string of thoughts, I had always known that UTA lacked quality hands-on instruction and quickly realized there were many students who felt the same way. I wished that there were labs for Electronics 1 and other classes, and I wished for more projects to put my hands on! Once these two thoughts merged, everything felt like it fell into place, something magical was born, something I called the GRSShoppers... Well, we never got that name to stick, but the dream of how this organization could supplement the University's teaching style absolutely did."
"Looking into the past, the thought of more experienced students giving mini-workshops, full-fledged labs, and mentoring younger students with hardware was something I wish I had when I began Electrical Engineering. Without those, I still turned out okay. With those, you will turn out great. Building competition level projects do provide valuable experiences, but they should remain as supplements to learning and be used to connect with your peers. No project is a project without those other brains rewriting your code right behind you."
